Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has checked into an undisclosed rehab facility on the East Coast following controversial comments made during a CNN interview from North Korea.
His agent Darren Prince acknowledged, “He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful for the anger and hurt his words have caused.”
While on an unsanctioned trip to North Korea to celebrate the birthday of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the NBA legend helped organize an exhibition basketball game.
Before returning to the U.S., Rodman was questioned by Chris Cuomo of CNN’s ‘New Day.’ His inappropriate and potentially damaging comments regarding a detained American missionary angered the State Department and riled up a top ranking Republican politician who spent five years in captivity during the Vietnam War. Sen. John McCain said bluntly, “I think he’s an idiot.”
Darren Prince said candidly, When he returned from North Korea, Rodman was beyond exhausted and overwhelmed. His drinking had obviously escalated to a level that none of us had seen before.”
He added, “Dennis has been in rehab most of this week, and I am very proud of him.”
The former athlete did a 2008 stint in a Florida rehab facility and appeared the following year on the third season of ‘Celebrity Rehab.’ He reportedly relapsed shortly after the show ended.
During his storied career, Rodman won five NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls and was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2011.
