Following a horrific crash at the Houston Grand Prix on Sunday, Ashley Judd rushed to the hospital bedside of her estranged husband, Dario Franchitti. The high-profile couple separated in January 2013 with the intention of seeking a divorce.
The three-time Indy 500 winner was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and is expected to be transferred to an Indianapolis hospital later this week.
He collided on the final lap, causing the #10 car to go airborne and strike the turn 5 catchfence. Thirteen fans were injured by falling debris that showered down on the grandstand. Most were treated on the scene with only two requiring transport to medical facilities.
Franchitti suffered two spinal fractures, a right ankle fracture and a concussion. He underwent surgery Monday to temporarily stabilize his right ankle. A Chip Ganassi Racing spokesman indicated he will undergo a second surgery in Indianapolis “within a few days.”
Nashville-based Judd tweeted, “Thank you for the prayers for @dariofranchitti. I have only clothes on my back & the dogs but that’s all that we need & we are on our way.”
She later updated her Twitter followers, “Amazed by the incredible outpouring of care & prayers. Thanks, everyone. Keeping our heads down here & doing what’s in front of us to do.”
