Notorious Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger was arrested yesterday in Los Angeles after 16 years on the run. He has been on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list for 16 years, for his role in 19 murders.

Recent publicity about the old case produced a tip that led agents to Santa Monica on Wednesday, where they found the 81-year-old mobster with is girlfriend Catherine Greig in their top-floor apartment just blocks from the Pacific Ocean.

Bulger will appear in court on Thursday to face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering. Greig, 60, faces charges of harboring a fugitive.

The gangster disappeared in 1995 after receiving a tip from a retired FBI agent that the feds were about to indict him.
