Beleaguered and still reeling from her recent N-word scandal, radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced Tuesday on Larry King Live that she will not renew her contract because she wants to “regain my First Amendment rights.”

The opinionated Dr. Laura found herself in hot water last week when she pitched a rant at a black woman who was feeling alienated from her white husband, his family and friends over their insensitivity with regard to racial slurs. Instead of sympathy or solid advice, the radio doc proceeded to fling the N-word at her an astounding 11 times in a five minute diatribe.

Schlessinger told Larry King that she is hanging up radio after 30 years: “I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry or some special-interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent.” Do we detect some bitterness?

The radio shock jock doesn’t regret her apology but she is hung up at surrendering her freedom of speech rights. She said: “I decided it was time to move on to other venues where I can say my peace and not have to live in fear anymore. I’m not retiring. I’m not quitting. I feel energized actually, stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for the people of this country.”
