Torrential rains totaling over five inches caused havoc in the Great Lakes Region Thursday night, leaving Milwaukee with flooding, power outages, and several people with injuries due to lightning strikes.
A 40-foot wide and 20-foot deep sinkhole swallowed up a Cadillac Escalade and a stop light last night, and caused officials to close down Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport this morning. The temporary closure of Mitchell was due to flooding of the airfield and several roads leading to the airport.
The sinkhole developed, according to the public works department, when a manhole gave way as rainwater gushed through Milwaukke’s drainage system. The 5-1/2 inch total was an inch shy of the local record.
A massive sinkhole developed in Guatemala City earlier this summer – see those amazing photos here.
