It’s not looking good for Christina Aguilera and her latest album “Bionic”. Since its release five weeks ago it has barely sold 200,000 copies. It may sound like a lot but when other artists like Drake are selling 450,000 in their first week of release, it puts the situation into perspective. Drake’s “Thank Me Later” continues to climb the charts while Xtina’s continues to fall. According to the New York Post, the pop star’s record label is in “rescue mode.”
Insiders expressed that Christina is set in her ways and the record label has tried to work with her but that she is not exactly willing to adapt. Though many assume that “rescue mode” means the label may drop Christina as an artist, her manager Irving Azoff claims, “I am the one who deals with the label, and this couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Music execs attribute the failure of the album to Aguilera misjudging of the market. In her early years she stood out because she was much edgier than her peers Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore and Britney Spears. Artists like Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Ke$ha are pulling out all of the stops which should be a clear signal to Augilera that she needs to find a different approach.
The singer, citing inadequate rehearsal time, canceled her summer tour — which most assume is ‘code’ for not selling enough tickets to fill a venue.
