David Wright aka ‘Speedballs’, plays third base for the New York Mets. He received a concussion on August 15 after he was hit in the head with a 94 mph fastball by San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain. That won’t stop the four year All Star from playing…but he will be sporting an over-sized helmet.
The 26-year-old is test driving a new S100 Rawlings helmet that is engineered to provide additional protection against another concussion. He was trying out the new topper in Denver against the Colorado Rockies and got a fair amount of ribbing from his teammates.
He had this to say: “I think there just needs to be some adjustments. Obviously, I don’t really care what I look like. If it provides a little more safety, then I’m all for it. There’s just times when it can fit a little better.”
Jimmy Kimmel said “he looks like the bobble-head version of himself”. He got some laughs when he made a comparison between the MLB player and the Great Gazoo, the tiny green floating alien on The Flintstones.
