After eight seasons, FOX drama series ’24’ has been canceled. Emmy and Golden Globe award winning actor Kiefer Sutherland played the lead character Jack Bauer in the 24-hour format.

The actor reflected on the long running series, “This has been the role of a lifetime. While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted ’24’ to finish on a high note.” The final two-hour episode will air May 24.

For those who fear they won’t be able to survive without Kiefer…no worries. According to executive producer Howard Gordon, his next project will be to create the film version of ’24’.

During the show’s long run, production schedules have had to be creatively juggled to accommodate the legal problems of the 43-year-old star. The film crew did manage to catch a break when Sutherland was able to serve 48 days in jail during the writer’s strike, the result of a DUI in 2007, his second in three years.

His latest scrape with the law occurred in early May 2009 when he head-butted fashion designer Jack McCollough outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. A repentant Sutherland smoothed things over with his victim and charges were eventually dropped. Brooke Shields found herself in the middle of the fiasco, because she happened to be chatting it up with Kiefer when the incident unfolded.

His latest bump in the road came when he got roped into a cattle scam — losing nearly $1 million in the process.

There have been some shining star moments for the celeb – including his Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony – pics here.
