Tennis pro Senera Williams was rushed to an L.A. hospital yesterday for emergency treatment related to a serious condition that began last week.

Serena’s rep Nicole Chabot made a statement on her client’s condition: “Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation.

Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctors appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot.”

The tennis great had surgery last year after cutting her foot on a shard of glass and had been in New York prior to her latest medical emergency for ongoing treatment with her foot specialist. Upon her return to L.A., she was rushed to Cedars Sinai Hospital for treatment and has since returned for additional medical intervention.

The rep added: “Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications.”

The only reference to any problems by the uber athlete was a quick ‘tweet’ late last night: “Tough day….”

Because of her ongoing foot rehab, the 29-year-old has withdrawn from the 2011 Australian Open and has seen a sharp slide in her tennis ranking.

Serena is currently World No. 12 in singles and No. 20 in doubles with her sister Venus Williams. She has previously been ranked World No. 1 on five separate occasions.
