Funnyman Billy Crystal is giving back to his damaged community by raising and personally donating a combined $1 million to help rebuild Long Island Beach in New York.
The beach town and boardwalk were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and Billy has stepped up to help with funding.
While standing on a newly installed patch of the town’s boardwalk, the ‘When Harry Met Sally’ star announced the monetary gift to the city of Long Beach on Saturday, as hundreds of beach-goers gathered for the announcement.
Crystal raised $888,000 of the money at the annual Celebrity Fight Night fundraiser back in March, a departure from the galas usual mission to benefit the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute and other charities. He added $112,000 to make it an even $1 million.
Crystal gave a Twitter shout out to some of his Hollywood pals for their support:
Construction is well underway with first stage project completion expected by mid-July. The cost for all phases of the boardwalk rebuild is estimated at $44 million.
