So… that was it?

Gotham Season 1 Episode 10 marked the midseason finale of this freshman Fox drama.

And if you were expecting the DC Comics-based series to leave you hanging from a cliff in anticipation its return in 2015… you were left sorely disappointed.

Bruce Wayne and his new gal pal, Selina Kyle, were on the run immediately, as assassins broke into Wayne Manor on a mission to kill the only witness to the Wayne murders.

Alfred fought them off as best they could because Alfred is totally awesome.

But Bruce and Selina Cat ended up in the underground world of Gotham, with Cat showing her rich young friend how to survive there.

While they were on the run, Harvey was angry at Jim for not disclosing information on Cat, while Jim was angry at Dent for putting her life in danger by talking to associates about the witness Gordon said he has hidden.

Jim ended up heading to Dick Lovecraft’s apartment because he assumed Lovecraft was behind the hit and he wanted him to call it of.

However, Gordon was ambushed there by the same assassins, who killed Lovecraft with Jim’s gun.

Eventually, thanks to the help of Fish Mooney (who’s cohort in crime was executed by Falcone in his attempt to find the mole in his organization), Jim and Harvey tracked down Bruce and Cat and saved their lives.

The young friends went their separate ways, mutual respect up the wazoo, and Jim found himself sitting alongside Dent in the mayor’s office.

The mayor was very unhappy about Lovecraft’s death and told the public that he committed suicide due to pressure from a rogue cop who erroneously fingered him for the Wayne murders. That rogue cop, of course, was Jim Gordon.

And we ended the hour with Gordon being reassigned to security guard duty as Arkham Asylum.

No doubt this setting will play a pivotal role in the back half of Gotham Season 1, but this episode played out like any other. The storylines lack substance and meat.

There’s very little to bait us into tuning in each week, as producers continue to rely far too strongly on the fact that these criminals will someday turn into the iconic villains we know so well.

In focusing on that ambiguous future, however, when you watch Gotham online, you get the boring sense that the writers have forgotten to pay close attention to the actual present.
