Ballroom legend Maksim Chmerkovskiy is returning to Dancing With the Stars for its upcoming Season 23, according to an ABC source.

Chmerkovskiy, 36, made his debut on Season 2 with Tia Carrere in 2006. They finished sixth, but he soon became a perennial contender.

He never quite got over the hump, however, until he finally claimed his first and only Mirrorball Trophy with Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis.

That was in Season 18, after which Mad Maks retired.

Now he will be coming back with a vengeance, however, and you can bet that Len Goodman will be hearing from him early and often.

Known as the bad boy of the ballroom for his passionate arguments with the judges - or with his partners - Maks was a major fan favorite.

Never one to mince words, he frequently went to bat on behalf of his partners, but wasn't shy about showing them some tough love either.

His relationship with Kirstie Alley was particularly memorable, as was his at-times combative partnership with the mercurial Hope Solo.

Often paired with underdogs because he's so good, Maks nearly took Alley to the promised land in one of the reality show's top runs.

The U.S. women's national team soccer star accused Maks of being abusive on DWTS, a charge from her book that he adamantly denied.

His younger brother, Val Chmerkovskiy, will also be in the mix this season, while his fiancée, Peta Murgatroyd, is pregnant and sidelined.

Maks and Peta got engaged in December 2015 after dating on and off for three years; she won season 22 with Nyle DiMarco in May.

Maks was previously engaged to DWTS' Karina Smirnoff, and starred on the Ukrainian version of The Bachelor a few years prior (seriously).

Chmerkovskiy was a guest judge last season, and joined Val this summer for a 45-city dance tour, Maks & Val Live on Tour: Our Way.

The pros we know will be on the floor this season:

Val, Maks, Witney Carson, Sharna Burgess, Artem Chigvintsev, Lindsay Arnold, Allison Holker, Sasha Farber and Gleb Savchenko.

As for the celeb side, Amber Rose will go Dancing with the Stars, as will Ryan Lochte, who looks to tango his way back into some positive PR.

Simone Biles is also on the producers' wish list.

The full list of participants for the Season 23 cast will be announced on Good Morning America (ABC, obviously) on Tuesday, August 30.

Who will join the ranks of DWTS winners?!

Dancing with the Stars Quotes

We should have started dancing with one arm waaay before.

Cristian de la Fuente [following his injury, trip to the hospital and subsequent stellar performance]

I am not the best dancer, and I have not been the best dancer from the beginning. I am happy we made it this far.
