Sacramento couple Cat and David Kaufman had a storybook relationship. They met. They loved. They married.
"We were each other's best friend," Cat said.
But after 20 years of marriage, things changed for the couple. For starters, Cat realized she was attracted to women. Then David became Dani.
When Cat realized her attraction to women, she knew she had to tell her husband. She also knew it would be the end of their marriage and could potentially destroy their relationship.
"I could tell she was really nervous," Dani said.
Upon hearing Cat's news, Dani, at the time David, responded with news of his own: he was also gay.
"It was excitement and relief," said Cat of her husband's shared revelation. She knew this was the beginning of the end for them as a couple but that their lives as individuals were just getting started.
Then David made another discovery. He wasn't gay. He was born in the wrong body.
David was transgendered.
Over a year ago, Dani began the transformation to become the woman on the outside that she is on the inside. After more than 50 years of pretending to be someone she's not, Dani says she finally feels like she's herself.
"I'm sorry if you don't understand it, but this is who I am," Dani responds when confronted by people who don't understand her change. "It feels good to be me...to be Danielle. This is incredibly cool."
The couple now live just a few minutes away from each other and have co-authored a book, Untying the Knot: A Husband and Wife's Story of Coming Out Together.
