The 2012 Tony Awards – a.k.a. 50 Shades of Gay, in the words of host Neil Patrick Harris – were doled out Sunday at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
Performances from the cast of Once, Hairspray and Newsies, plus a special award for Hugh Jackman and so much more made it a night to remember.
Once stole the theatrical spotlight, raking in eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical Direction, Best Lead Actor and the top award for Best Musical.
Clybourne Park took home the highly coveted award for Best Play.
Peter and the Starcatcher came in second with five awards including Christian Borle’s win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role.
Also, former Private Practice star Audra McDonald took home the award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.
Nina Arianda surprised many with a Best Leading Actress win for Venus in Fur, in perhaps the annual show’s most unexpected honor. Or was it?
