Lorde "Royals" Lyrics Criticized as "Deeply Racist" By Blogger

Lorde, the New Zealand-born singer and the youngest person to top the U.S. pop charts in 25 years, is facing allegations of racism over the lyrics to her hit song “Royals.”

The 16-year-old, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, rails against the fact that “every song” these days is about gold teeth, luxury cars and the like.

In response, Veronica Bayetti Flores, an influential blogger, wrote a searing post last week on feministing (dot) com, calling the song “deeply racist.”

“Because we all know who she’s thinking when we’re talking gold teeth, Cristal and Maybachs," she writes. "So why s--t on black folks? Why s--t on rappers?

"Why aren’t we critiquing wealth by taking hits at golf or polo or Central Park East?”

Lorde fans fired back at Bayetti Flores early and often over this critique.

A common refrain? That the blogger is the arrogant, ignorant one for interpreting a song by a New Zealand teen through the lens of American race relations.

“I realize not everything in this world is an instrument of oppression,” wrote one New Zealand journalist in defense of Lorde and in response to Flores.

“And not everything in this world should be viewed through the lens of Americans, particularly when it comes to race and cultures of other countries.”

Bayette Flores stood by her post amid the barrage of criticism, while a spokesman for Lorde's record label said she no comment on the controversy.

Read Lorde's "Royals" lyrics for yourself below ...

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envy

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood,
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

My friends and I we've cracked the code.
We count our dollars on the train to the party.
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this,
We didn't come for money.

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom.
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

Ooh ooh oh
We're bigger than we ever dreamed,
And I'm in love with being queen.
Ooh ooh oh
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy

ignorant imbecile. to judge this song as racist is a pathetic cop out. that judgement comes from envy. what this song is talking about is the superficial attitude in alot of pop/rap/hiphop. she never wouldve had a reason to write these lyrics if it werent for people constantly rapping about their gold chains and bentleys. certain "artists" think that tons of people will buy their records if they write lyrics about being rich and having more money than the average person. what is respectable about that? "oh hes got a gold chain and a bentley so he MUST have talent.. i better go out and buy his new album so that i can be cool like all these other materialistic followers." lorde is mocking materialism, and superficiality in this song. this is what art should be. people who write materialistic songs like "its all about the benjamins" shouldnt even be allowed to make music as they pervert what its meant to be (art) and turn it into something disgusting so that they can put their faces all over cheap merchandise (t shirts, lunch boxes, disney channel shows, etc..). music made purely with profit in mind ceases to be art, and succeeds in being more of a 4 minute advertisement. music like this shunning those materialistic and superficial motives are what is keeping music alive. to say this song is racist is spiteful and jealous because the artists you say that shes insulting by these lyrics truly have no talent and come from all races. i.e .. chingy = black rapper/ materialistic and no talent. all he has to take "pride" in are his gold chains and hoes. in comparison, paul wall. a white rapper that goes on and on about how you should buy his new album because he has his own line of "diamond encrusted grills yo". the sad thing is people actually buy into this swill and consider it to be art when really all these fake artists are are franchises.. no different than mcdonalds, mass produced and lacking true substance.

People are so stupid!!! Every song about pooping bottles and gold.teeth DOES NOT involve black.people! White artist talk about partying too and that's all she saying. How about they ask someone that was suppose to be offended before they make assumptions because I'm.not offended at all.. she's just someone new to pick on..

You go Lorde! She is correct every freakin song is about gold teeth, Crystal, ect. At what point do we say "we dont care were not caught up in your love affair" and shut these talent less flappers up. I am black and grew up listening to rap/hip hop. This generation of recording artist sucks!

Lorde, the poet, has every license to comment on what she sees in the world about her--and as with all art, it is as much in the eyes and the ears of the beholders and the listeners as the artist. I didn't perceive any racism but rather an anthem questioning "where do our true values fit into a world choked with artifice devised to appeal to our baser instincts and appetites." Lorde may be on the eve of her 17th birthday but "she wasn't born yesterday." I love her!!
