Nick Denton’s Gawker to lose Choire Sicha
» More Media
If it happens, you can say you read it here first: It looks like Gawker is losing its second editor, Choire Sicha, in the very near future – perhaps even this week – according to our Let’s Invent A Technology So We Can Talk About Ourselves correspondent.
A quick look at Choire’s website reveals something to that nature. He writes:
On June 1, 2004, the squirrel that for quite some time marked this website began to die. It’s nearly invisible now, as you can see, all white and see-through. Fairly soon, I will no longer be the squirrel at all. Goodbye, sad kingdom of squirreldom. Too bad, but change is on me.
Not sure what animal I’ll be next, but we’ll all certainly see as soon as I find out.
We assume the “squirreldom” refers to Nick Denton’s Gawker Media, of which he is also editorial director. Our sources don’t yet know whether Choire will stay on in that position while a new nobody New York writer takes over Gawker’s daily editorial.
Sicha declined to comment on the matter – which, if you know your J. Lo from your Manolo, always means “yes,” except for that rare instance where your PR rep can’t comment on an annulment because the wedding “doesn’t even exist.”
As you recall, Sicha took over Elizabeth Spier’s editorship when she split for New York magazine in October 2003. Since then, Sicha has continued writing for the The New York Observer, and even refers that publication as home base, whereas Gawker is just something he logs into each day.
And in the spirit of Wonkette, we add: MUST CREDIT JOSSIP! MUST CREDIT JOSSIP!
UPDATE: By popular request, we’re adding a rumor that Sicha is headed to Calcanis & Co. at Weblogs, Inc. Let the hilarity ensue.
