Buldgegategate: The disappearing ‘NYT’ earpiece story

Like any responsible media, FAIR (Fair and Accuracy in Reporting) is jumping into the Bush Buldgegate story long after it can have any impact in the political realm. But causing a headache for the New York Times is right around the corner, so we’ve immediately forgiven them.

Reduced to Jay Leno‘s opening monologue, the saga over Bush’s alleged earpiece during the presidential debates was actually the focus of a widescale reporting effort undertaken by three Times journos. Though as any regular reader of the Times will know (and you can add us to that list, at least for the past week), such a story never ran. And the NYT will have you believe it never existed.

It seems senior editors thought it was too close to the election to run such a controversial piece. And anyhow, we’re told it’s not wise to mimic Dan Rather is hopes of journalistic supremacy.
