21 polo horses are dead after collapsing from an unknown toxin just before a tournament in Florida.

The polo ponies, from the Venezuelan-owned team Lechuza Caracas, appeared to have died of heart failure caused by a toxin that could have been in tainted food, vitamins, supplements, or a combination of all three, according to a veterinarian who treated one of the sick horses.

The horses collapsed and died on the scene or while being transported or treated at vet clinics.

Any sort of airborne infection has been ruled out and it will likely be days or even weeks before toxicology reports identify the toxin.
