It’s official — MSNBC has cancelled the weekly talk show of Alec Baldwin two weeks after suspending the actor for using anti-gay slurs.

According to the cable and satellite news television channel, “It was a mutual parting and we wish Alec all the best.”

The former ’30 Rock’ celebrity appeared on five Friday night episodes of ‘Up Late with Alec Baldwin’ before landing in hot water for using objectionable language against a photographer during a street squabble near his coop apartment in Manhattan.

The incident was captured on video and it didn’t take the network long to determine that the verbal tirade was decidedly homophobic in nature.

As is his usual practice, Baldwin apologized for the incident that arose as he was walking with his wife Hilaria Thomas Baldwin and their infant daughter near their residence.

He stated on the MSNBC website, “I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have — and for that I am deeply sorry. Words are important. I understand that, and will choose mine with great care going forward.”

After sitting on the sidelines for the past two weeks, this Friday was to have been Baldwin’s return to his usual 10:00 p.m. eastern time slot to discuss current events and politics.

Apparently MSNBC decided not to forgive and forget … or perhaps it was all about the lackluster ratings. During the fourth and fifth week of the show, viewership dropped below 400,000.

Hilaria Baldwin posted on Twitter yesterday, “I’ve learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. Anonymous.”
