Katy Perry has released the music video for her latest song ‘Unconditionally’ this week on YouTube with 4.5 million views during the first two days.
In the past Katy has been all about rainbows and lollipops but the new video is a departure with a decidedly Victorian-style that she uses to express the serious side of love “with gowns by Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Wes Gordon” — according to a comment she made on social media.
The music video doesn’t have a complete narrative and is reportedly influenced by such films as ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and ‘Anna Karenina.’
‘Unconditionally’ director Brent Bonacorso told MTV, “When she sings this song she doesn’t sing it lightly. This love that she speaks of is like a force of nature, epic storm and a tempest, and that’s definitely something I wanted to capture… a more mysterious, elegant and sophisticated world to live in… less about a time period and more about creating an impression and a feeling.”
Perry ends the video with flowers and car parts splattering behind her. Regarding that spectacular video climax, she tweeted this question to her 47.7 million followers, “Yes, unconditional loves sometimes feels like being hit by a car… Or being on fire… How does it feel to you?”
It is the fifth song from her recently released album ‘Prism.’ She’ll kick off a world tour in May 2014 with the first stop in the UK.
