The captain of the Steamboat Natchez spotted a body floating in the Mississippi River near the French Quarter Wednesday. The dead man, whose body was pulled from the water at 11:15 a.m., was identified as actor Michael Showers of the HBO drama Treme.

The actor portrayed a police captain, John Guidry, on the HBO series set in the New Orleans neighborhood of Treme, Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Showers, 45, was reported missing on Tuesday by his girlfriend, who indicated he had failed to come home after a night out in the French Quarter with another man.

Chief investigator John Gagliano of the Orleans Parish coroner’s office indicated that the body appears to have been in the water for two days. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
