The alternative rock band R.E.M. announced via their website today that they are “calling it a day as a band.”
Michael Stipe, frontman for the group, wanted fans to know that it “wasn’t an easy decision, but all things must end. We wanted to do it right, to do it our way.”
The group released the following statement: “We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”
Current members, besides Stipe, include bassist Mike Mills and guitarist Peter Buck. Drummer Bill Berry left the band in 1997.
Their hit 1992 album Out of Time, earned the group three Grammys.
