Last week I received a package from GoldieBlox, a toy company whose main goal is to inspire the next generation of female engineers — founded by engineer Debbie Sterling. Like so many girls, Debbie Sterling was born an engineer…she just didn’t know it. She’s working to inspire the next generation of female engineers through GoldieBlox – a construction toy that marries storytelling with engineering, and opens the world of STEM to girls ages 5 and up. Watch the video to learn about the inspiration for GoldieBlox and the impact it’s making on girls and their families.

Debbie wanted to help young girls develop spatial skills, understand basic engineering principles and build self-confidence in problem solving. As young girls internalize and learn more effectively through storytelling, GoldieBlox marries the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who loves to build, with a construction kit

The project that I received was ‘Goldieblox and the Parade Float.’ My 6-year-old buddy Olivia and I had a great time reading the book and putting together the parade float. Olivia had this to say about the project: “I liked it because I got to read and put it together. And I can make different things.”

The company was launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications including The Atlantic and Forbes. Debbie’s inspiration to create a mission-driven company came in 2008, when she spent six months volunteering at a grassroots nonprofit in rural India. She created a viral fundraising campaign, raising over $30,000 for economic and educational development in the region. This experience helped pave the way to finding her true passion: inspiring the next generation of female engineers.

After we put together the float, Olivia didn’t want to stop. In the back of the book we discovered more fun things to build and she wanted to keep going. Holding this little lady’s attention is a big deal and she loved it! Check out the different building sets that are available here.

During a Google+ chat with Debbie last week it was clear that she has passion and excitement for young girls and growing her business. GoldieBlox made its way from Kickstarter to the aisles of America’s largest toy retailer, Toys”R”Us.
