After over a decade, Gibbs and the gang are slowly returning to the formulaic, case-of-the-week approach to storytelling.

NCIS Season 12 Episode 2 kicked off a side-plot involving Vance, and was that a love interest for Abby we saw last night?

Vance, who is still mourning the loss of his wife, fell ill during “Kill the Messenger.” What he and his doctors feared was cancer turned out to be nothing more than a virus that mimics cancer on scans, but it was enough to scare him–and Ducky–into getting his affairs in order.

Abby’s new possible love interest makes the lab genius shine and it’s nice to see.

As for the case of the week, there’s a reason they’re called formulaic, and that’s because many of them are very much the same old thing.

A government official dies. Someone wants to cover it up. Gibbs and the team assemble and solve the case. Credits roll.

What was slightly interesting about this one was the fact that the Liutenant is basketball buddies with the President. Not many people can say they’ve played a pickup game at the White House.

It’s hard to top this season’s villain, so perhaps that’s why the case this week felt so humdrum.
