Ben Whishaw, best known to American audiences for taking over as Q in last year's Skyfall, revealed himself as gay in a statement late last week to The Daily Mail.
Said a spokesman for the British star, referring to Whishaw's year-long marriage to composer Mark Bradshaw:
"Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work. Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy."
Whishaw starred as a gay man in an off-Broadway play titled The Pride in 2011.
He hinted of his sexuality that year during an interview with Out, telling the magazine that he doesn't "quite know yet the way to go about" being a role model to young gay people.
Whishaw rose to fame in Great Britain for his many stage roles, transitioning to the big screen in Layer Cake, opposite future James Bond star Daniel Craig.
He also played Keith Richards in the biopic Stoned and will next be seen with Rupert Grint and Brendan Coyle in a West End revival of Jez Butterworth's Mojo.
