Derek Jeter, the captain and starting shortstop for the New York Yankees, fractured his ankle in the 12th inning of the American League Championship Series opener this evening and will miss the remainder of the postseason.
Which, at this rate, will last approximately three more games for the Yankees.
Following a record-setting, game-tying home run by Raul Ibanez in the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees offense once again sputtered and couldn't push anyone across the plate over the next three innings.
In the 12th, Jeter moved to his left to field a ground ball, only to tumble down in pain. He was helped off the field, unable to put any weight on his left leg.
Following the 6-4 loss, Joe Girardi announced that Jeter had broken his ankle and will require three months to recuperate.
