Michael ‘Tobi’ Oyedeji
May 21, 1992 – May 16, 2010
Texas A&M signee, Michael ‘Tobi’ Oyedeji, has died of injuries he suffered in a car accident early Sunday morning after his senior prom. He was rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital followed the three vehicle crash, where he died during surgery.
The accident happened on South Main near Lomcrest in southwest Houston. Oyedeji celebrated his senior prom with his classmates on Saturday night. Afterward, they went to an after-party at Dave n’ Buster’s. At 6:15 a.m., Tobi was driving southbound, lost control of his silver Toyota Avalon, and hit a curb in the median. His vehicle flew into the opposite lane, striking another car before slamming head-on into an SUV. Nurse Gertha Augustin, driving a Jeep, died at the scene.
Houston Police are conducting an investigation to determine if alcohol played a role in the accident.
The Bellaire High School power forward was a first team All Greater Houston selection. He earned a full scholarship to Texas A&M and would have entered his freshman year this Fall. The 6’9″, 215 pound standout athlete was named MVP following the All-Star Game held in Azusa, California on May 1, 2010.
Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon said on May 5: “He is a terrific young man and I know our basketball fans, and everyone on the Texas A&M campus, will love to get to know this young man. He is and will continue to be a great representative of Texas A&M.”
Turgeon made the following entry on his Twitter page early this morning: “Please pray for Tobi Oyedeji. He was in a car accident last night and is battling some significant injuries. He needs our prayers.”
Following his young recruit’s death, Turgeon said: “The world has lost a great kid today. Tobi epitomized the term student-athlete. He was a very good student. He worked hard in the classrooms and on the basketball court and he was a terrific basketball player. This is difficult to understand and today is a very sad day. My heart aches for his mom and dad. Tobi was an only child.”
Oyedeji would have turned 18 on Friday.
