U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle (Gabby) Giffords was shot today in Tucson, Arizona.
Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, was shot “point blank in the head” at a public event outside a grocery store. At least nine other people were shot and wounded. The attacker was taken into custody after being tackled by a bystander.
UPDATE: There are conflicting reports about the condition of Congresswoman Giffords. Initial reports and the AP reported that she had died, however, a hospital spokesperson has confirmed that she is currently in surgery.
UPDATE: There were 18 people shot. Six people are confirmed dead. No names have been released at this time. There has been no update on Congresswoman Giffords’ condition.
It has been confirmed that the suspect is in custody.
UPDATE: Gabrielle Gifford is out of surgery. She was shot “through and through” in the head (through the brain), according to a surgeon at the hospital. The doctor also said Gifford is in critical condition, but is “following commands” and he is “very optimistic” about her recovery. It has been confirmed that one of the deceased was a young child “about 9-years-old.”
UPDATE: Federal judge John Roll is among the six confirmed dead.
