Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace still can’t believe that he has been suspended for seven games after elbowing James Harden.
During a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 22, World Peace caused an opposing player to suffer a concussion and was assessed a flagrant foul-2 and ejected from the game.
NBA Commissioner David Stern explained the reason why a substantial penalty was levied: “The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area. We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players.”
Metta said, “I didn’t expect to get seven games. I also didn’t expect James Harden to be right behind me and I hit him with the elbow. But I’m happy he’s OK. It could have been a bad elbow. I definitely didn’t mean to throw an elbow at Mr. Harden’s head.”
Harden sat out Tuesday but tweeted yesterday, “I’m solid. Feeling good. Appreciate y’all for checking on me!!”
World Peace will miss Thursday’s regular-season finale against Sacramento and all Lakers playoff games. The suspension will carry over to the first few games next season.
