Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recorded a video announcement indicating that she will step down within the next few days in order to continue her recovery.

The U.S. Rep., D-Ariz, spoke slowly but emphatically during the two-minutes of footage, explaining that she wanted to do the right thing for Arizona and would resign this week.

The moving footage showed scenes from the hospital room where she spent many months recovering from a gunshot wound that severely injured her brain.

The shooter, 23-year-old Jared Loughner, is charged with 49 felonies for his actions on Jan. 8, 2011. Six people died, including a federal judge, a congressional staffer and a 9-year-old girl. Thirteen others were wounded.

Gabby emphasized during her upbeat message, “I am getting better. Every day my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.”
