Barack Obama delighted a crowd of 1,400 supporters at the Apollo Theater fundraiser in Harlem Thursday night when he broke into song.

The NYC charity concert was headlined by gospel and soul singer Al Green. In a nod to his famous tune Let’s Stay Together, President Obama sang the opening strains: “I, I’m so in love with you.”

When the audience erupted into cheers he responded while gesturing to his handlers, “Those guys didn’t think I would do it. I told you I was going to do it. The sandman did not come out. Don’t worry Rev. I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation.”

The sandman reference was to a character who used to escort bad acts from the famed Apollo music hall stage.

Al Green said, “Terrific, he nailed it. I was thrilled that the President even mentioned my name, and if the President can get the economy going again and get everything going that he wants to, then we’ll all be together.”
