After serving nearly two years behind bars in a federal prison in Levenworth, Kansas, Michael Vick was given new life last night. He has signed a two-year contact with the Philadelphia Eagles and will earn a reported $1.6 million in year one and $5 million in year two.
The 29-year-old former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three-time Pro Bowler fell from grace after being charged with financing and operating an interstate dogfighting ring. His legal problems resulted in financial ruin for the athlete who had been pulling down $25 million a year in salaries and endorsements. He filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while in prison. The court filing stated that he had $50 million in assets and owed between $10 million and $50 million in debts.
Vick was released from home confinement on May 20, 2009. NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell conditionally reinstated Vick on July 27th. He will be eligible for full reinstatement by Week 6 of the 2009 season at the latest.
