The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appeared obviously distressed during a public appearance in Malaysia after compromising photos of the former Kate Middleton appeared Thursday on the cover of French magazine Closer.

The images were captured while Prince William and Duchess Catherine were enjoying a private holiday in France before embarking on their nine-day Asian tour.

The couple stayed in a remote location on the grounds of the luxurious Chateau d’Autet resort in Provence, France.

St. James’s Palace released a statement: “Their Royal Highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner. They had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them.”

Officials acting on their behalf are considering legal action. The latest invasion of privacy occurred just weeks after Prince Harry suffered a similar embarrassment following a private party in his hotel suite in Las Vegas.

In the meantime, Will and Kate will spend several days in Malaysia before heading to the Solomon Islands.
