New rules and twists for season twenty-two of Survivor ….

According to show host Jeff Probst, there will be some new twists when Survivor: Redemption Island premieres Feb. 16 on CBS. There will be second chances and new rules for quitters when the twenty-second season begins.

Probst explained that when a contestant is voted off, he or she won’t leave the game but will instead live alone on Redemption Island. The person will face off in a duel against the next contestant voted off. That winner will remain on the island and go head-to-head against the next person voted off. The last person standing will have the opportunity to return to the game.

As for quitters, the producers will now have discretion to keep them on the show or leave them off the jury. The outcome of Survivor: Nicaragua cost Chase Rice the win because two quitters, NaOnka Mixon and Kelly Shinn remained on the jury. Their votes gave the win to Fabio Birza – check it out here.

If this new concept sounds a little familiar, it is because they tried a similar version during Survivor: Pearl Islands with an Outcast Tribe. The host said: “It didn’t work and it didn’t please the audience and there was one fundamental flaw — we didn’t tell people up front it was going to happen.”

The new season was actually filmed from August to September 2010 near San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the same place as the previous season.
