Dr. Conrad Murray will serve as his own representation, at least for now, in an appeal process that he is mounting from his jail cell. The first round of documents were filed on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
This move comes just days after Judge Michael Pastor handed him the maximum sentence for involuntary manslaughter in the death of pop icon Michael Jackson.
Currently incarcerated at the L.A. Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, Murray has started the ball rolling on a claim that Pastor made a series of pretrial decisions that limited the ability of his attorney’s to properly defend him. They had hoped to call other doctors to the stand who had previously administered the drug propofol to help Jackson sleep.
In the notice of appeal, the doctor is requesting a preliminary hearing and trial transcripts, all written motions, and jury instructions–appeal documents here.
So why hasn’t Murray hired a lawyer to represent him in the appellate process? According to experts, it’s not unusual for appeal notices to be filed in that manner before a lawyer who specializes in appeals is chosen. It is highly unlikely that he will go through the entire process on his own.
