Carla Bruni-Sarkozy delivered a baby girl on Wednesday at the private Muette Clinic in Paris, the first infant born to a sitting president of modern-day France. French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived three hours later to meet his daughter.

Very little official information is expected. Bruni, a former model and aspiring singer, recently said in an interview, “You don’t have a child for the gallery. I will do everything to protect this child. I will not show photos of this child, I will never expose this child.”

Busy dealing with the euro debt crisis, the head of state paid several short visits to his wife throughout the day but was in Frankfort when their child was delivered.

The newborn, whose name has not been revealed, arrived at 8:00 p.m. and President Sarkozy and his entourage entered the medical facility at 11:00 p.m.

The couple married in 2008 after a brief romance. He has three sons from two previous marriages, and she has a ten-year-old son fathered by philosophy professor Raphael Enthoven.
