Thursday night’s elimination episode of American Idol held many surprises, including the fact that Jessica Sanchez ended up with her neck on the chopping block.
Sanchez, the petite power vocalist, has been a favorite of the judges all season long and has been praised consistently for her spot-on performances.
Landing in the bottom three with the 17-year-old San Diego contestant were Elise Testone and Joshua Ledit.
Despite suggestions by Idol mentor and music producer Jimmy Lovine that Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips were the most likely to end their journey, it turned out to be three competitors who had strong showings on Wednesday night that were in jeopardy of going home after the nationwide vote results were revealed.
On hearing the three names Steven Tyler said emphatically, “We’ll be using the judges save tonight.”
Jessica Sanchez, singing for the save, barely got started when the judges stormed the stage. Jennifer Lopez said, “Give me that mic. This is crazy. Go sit down, go sit down.”
It was good news indeed for the clearly shell-shocked Jessica but next week the Top 7 will be pared down to the Top 5 when two people are eliminated.
