New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is being seriously scrutinized by Major League Baseball officials for allegedly taking part in illegal, underground poker games.
The Yankees player is accused of participating in at least two high-stakes poker games, one of them at the Beverly Hills home of a record executive. At the L.A. area party, players were reportedly playing for half-million dollars pots and “cocaine was openly used.”
A-Rod will be interviewed as part of the investigation. A spokesman at the commissioner’s office said: “We’re talking to people involved in the investigation and we’re taking this very seriously. Because he has been warned about this before, I would say a possible suspension would be very much in play.”
Rodriguez was warned in 2005 by MLB commissioner Bud Selig and the Yankees organization to stay clear of poker clubs. They also cautioned him not to get caught up in sports betting that could result in a Pete Rose-type ban from baseball.
