Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is mourning the loss of his oldest son Garrett Reid, who was discovered dead in a dorm room at Lehigh University Sunday morning.
A 911 call was placed at 7:20 a.m. According to the University chief of police Edward Shupp, the 29-year-old was unresponsive when an officer arrived at his room. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Northampton County coroner Zachary Lysek.
Shupp said, “The investigation is ongoing. There were no suspicious activities.”
The news rocked the Eagles training camp, where the younger Reid had been working with the team’s strength and conditioning staff.
It was no secret to the Eagles organization that Andy Reid’s son has been battling heroin addiction dating back to 2007. He served several stints in prison following a drug fueled car crash and failing a subsequent drug test while on parole.
Coach Reid was absent from training camp practice this morning but insisted that his offensive and defensive coordinators oversee the planned session.
Ironically the last time Andy Reid missed a team workout was when he took a five-week leave of absence in 2007 to be with his family after Garrett was arrested.
Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement: “The news is heartbreaking for everyone in the Eagles family. Our hearts go out to Andy, his wife, Tammy, and their children.”
