Mike Wallace 1918-2012

Veteran broadcast journalist Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes fame for over four decades died on April 7, 2012 at the age of 93. He was the father of Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday.

News of his death was revealed on Face the Nation by CBS host Bob Schieffer who reported that his former colleague died surrounded by family in New Haven, Connecticut at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night following a long illness.

Later in his life Mike was asked what he’d like to see as his epitaph. He replied, “Tough But Fair.”

Diane Sawyer said of his passing, “Mike’s energy and nerve paced everyone at 60 Minutes. His was the defining spirit of the show. He bounded through the halls with joy at the prospect of the new, the true, the unexpected.”

Another CBS veteran, Andy Rooney, died in November 2011 at the age of 92.

Wallace is survived by Mary Yates his wife since 1986. He is preceded in death by a son, Peter Wallace, who died at age 19 in a mountain-climbing accident in Greece in 1962.
