We’ve covered the rocky career of Amy Winehouse and have witnessed and shared her moments of magic as well as those times when she had slipped into the depths of dispair because of her addiction to alcohol and drugs.

In looking through photos that showcased the life and times of a sometimes brilliant and often misguided soul, today we remember her positive influences and chose to celebrate those times.

Amy Jade Winehouse was born September 14, 1983 and died at age 27 at her Camden flat in London on July 23, 2011 – see coroner’s photos here. She was born to Mitchell Winehouse and Janis Winehouse, he a taxi driver and she a pharmacist.

Young Amy got her first guitar at age 13 and began writing songs a year later. Her debut album Frank was released in 2003. Back to Black was released three years later. Her widely acclaimed single Rehab hit #1 and it was named ‘Top Song of 2007’ by Time magazine.

Rehab turned out to be Amy’s golden ticket at the 2008 Grammy Awards, where she won Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance of the Year honors – music video.

Things deteriorated for the remainder of her life, with the illusive third album never materializing, and a planned tour canceled because the singer wasn’t well enough to pull it off.

We’ve included photos going back to Amy’s childhood days. Check out a gallery that shows Amy at her best, during those fleeting moments of brilliance:
