Central Oslo was rocked by a mass shooting at a Utoya island youth camp and a bombing attack on Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least 91 people. A 32-year-old suspect, Anders Behring Breivik was arrested.
He allegedly bought six tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer on May 4. It is believed that he acted alone in both attacks. Police no longer believe that it was the work of international terrorists that caused mayhem in Norway on Friday, but rather “a madman’s work.”
The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear, but the mangled wreckage of a car near one of the buildings has led investigators to suspect a car bomb.
One blast occurred near the 17-story office building of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and another was reported near the Norwegian parliament, according to CNN. A third location, the Oil Ministry building, was reported to be in flames.
Stoltenberg heads a coalition government made up of the Labour Party, the Socialist Left Party and the Centre Party.
Reuters journalist Walter Gibbs reported seeing eight injured people, including two or three with what appeared to be serious wounds. Gibbs said: “One explosion blew out every widow on the side of a main government building.”
Nick Soubiea, an American-Swedish tourist in Oslo was less than 100 yards from one blast. He said: “It was almost in slow motion, like a big wave that almost knocked us off our chairs. It was extremely frightening. There were people running down the streets, people crying, everyone on their cell phones calling home.”
