The First Lady is in Los Angeles to film a cameo scene on the award-winning hit Nickelodeon sitcom iCarly. Michelle Obama will appear with the lead character, played by Miranda Cosgrove.

Obama’s goal is to get the word out about Joining Forces, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness and support for military families.

The storyline for the special episode will have the lead character, Carly Shay, in a funk over her Air Force colonel father missing her birthday because he is serving overseas. She and two of her friends break a few rules so that she can have a web chat with her dad.

The First Lady discovers what they have done and pays them a visit so that she can counsel the teen and point out that Carley is actually serving her country too, through her father.

Nickelodeon president Cyma Zarghami said: “Regardless of your political affinity, everybody cares about these families, so it just feels right.”

The Obama daughters, Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, are big fans of iCarly. Unfortunately they’ll have to wait until next year to see their famous mother in action. The episode will air in January 2012.
