In a ‘birth by design’, a Rockford, Illinois doctor orchestrated the delivery of twins via cesarean section. Ashley Fansler was given the opportunity to birth her babies in two different years.

Fansler and Brandon Lewis welcomed baby daughter Madisen Carin Lewis at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2010, followed a minute later by son Aiden Everette Lewis at 12:00 a.m. January 1, 2011.

The new mother wasn’t due to deliver the babies until late January but her physician determined that they needed to be delivered early to avoid complications.

That said, he offered them an opportunity to give their children notoriety by doing the surgery close to midnight. According to the new mother, her doctor counted down the seconds in the operating room at Rockford Memorial Hospital. The baby girl weighed 4 pounds six ounces and her brother tipped the scales at 5 pounds 9 ounces.

We can’t help but wonder if the AMA might find this slightly unethical — but due to the fact that they were all straightforward about the events, we’re guessing the staged birth will be a non-issue.
