Multi-millionaire businessman James Heselden, owner of the Segway scooter company, was killed when he accidentally drove a Segway off a cliff on his British estate.
According to The Telegraph, police were called at 11:40 a.m. Sunday with reports of a man in the River Wharfe in Yorkshire, England. A rugged country version of the Segway scooter was recovered near Heselden’s body.
“At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious,” a police spokesman told the British paper.
Segways are motorized scooters that use gyroscopes to stay upright and are controlled by the direction the driver leans. They were invented by Dean Kamen, who sold his company to Heselden earlier this year.
Heselden, 62, was worth around $265 million and ranked 395th on the Sunday Times Rich List.
He was a former miner who made his fortune from his company, Hesco Bastion, which developed a wire cage water containment system which was used for flood control and in military defense.
The wire cage systems developed by Bastions have become standard military equipment for Nato as well as American and British forces.
