The body of a woman found around 3:00am Thursday morning at the Soho House hotel has been identified as 33-year-old fashion designer, Sylvie Cachay.
Authorities were called to the fashionable private club and hotel after bath water from Cachay’s fifth floor room flooded the tub and leaked down into the room below. The water was still running when police arrived and found the woman alone and unconscious, wearing a sweater, shirt and underwear. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prescription drugs were found at the scene, as well as signs that Cachay’s hair had caught fire, leading investigators to initially suspect she was smoking drugs and overdosed. Upon further examination bruises were discovered on Cachay’s neck.
Cachay’s boyfriend, Nicholas Brooks, who checked into the the hotel with her, returned to the room around 3:30am while police were there. He is being questioned in connection with her death.
According to a friend, Cachay had a rocky relationship with 24-year-old Nicholas, who is the son of Oscar-winning songwriter, Joseph Brooks, who wrote the song, “You Light Up My Life,” made famous by Debby Boone. The elder Brooks was indicted last year on 82 counts of sex-related crimes.
“I don’t think it was a healthy relationship,” said the friend. “I just think he’s unstable from what she’s told me.” The two had reportedly been dating about two months.
Cachay interned with fashion designer Marc Jacobs, and had recently caught the attention of Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
