Anthony Weiner informed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi last night that he was stepping down from his congressional post, representing New York’s 9th District.
Pelosi received the news on her cellphone while attending the annual White House Congressional picnic.
Finally bowing to intense pressure from all sides, the beleaguered politician announced his resignation, unable to withstand the “sexting” scandal that continued to drip new revelations and lewd photos over the past 10 days.
He had reportedly been warned that if he did not leave of his own accord, House Democratic Leaders were planning to strip him of his committee assignments on Thursday.
At 9:30 a.m. this morning, according to NBC correspondent Luke Russert, congressional staffers from Rep. Anthony Weiner’s capitol hill office began filing out with their personal belongings. The lights were turned off and the door was locked. Incoming calls are now going to voicemail.
Weiner’s pregnant wife and Washington insider, Huma Abedin, returned Tuesday night from a State Department mission with her boss, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The politician resigned at a news conference in New York shortly after 2:00 p.m. eastern. His emotional four-minute statement was frequently interrupted by a boisterous heckler.
Former Rep. Weiner apologized “for the personal mistakes I have made and for the embarrassment I have caused.” His wife was not at his side.
