Dan Wheldon 1978 – 2011
Dan Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, died in a multi-car crash during an IndyCar race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
Fifteen cars were involved in the fiery crash on Lap 13 that sent vehicles spinning out of control and bursting into flames.
Wheldon, 33, was vying for the $5 million prize when his car flew over another vehicle and landed in a catch fence outside turn 2. It was his 134th career start, but only his third start of the season.
Dan was extricated from his car and airlifted to University Medical Center. Two hours after the accident, the other drivers were told that Wheldon died of his injuries.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race.”
In the deceased racer’s honor, drivers took a five-lap salute around the oval.
Wheldon was named IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year in 2003, and went on to win the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011.
He is survived by his wife Susie Behm, and their two sons: Sebastian, 2, and Oliver, 7-months. They reside in St. Petersburg, Florida.
