GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot was found dead at the age of 34 on the band’s tour bus Thursday morning after a concert in Minneapolis.

GWAR, known for it’s alien-inspired characters and wild costumes, started in the early 1980s in Richmond, VA. Smoot joined the band in 2002, taking over the role of Flattus Maximus — known for his red face, white dreadlocks, dinosaur-head shoulder pads and reptile feet.

Smoot’s body was discovered as the heavy metal band’s tour bus was crossing the border into Canada.

Frontman David Brockie issued a statement, saying:

“It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of Gwar announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot.”

“Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.”

No cause of death has been given at this time.

GWAR performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last week (see video below), and despite Smoot’s unexpected passing, the band plans to remain on tour. They are scheduled to play in Edmonton on Friday.
