John Kerry, the senior U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and 2004 presidential nominee, was sporting two black eyes and a broken nose when the camera panned on him during during last night’s State of the Union address.

While it looked like he had been on the losing end of a major brawl, it turns out the injuries were the result of an annual game of hockey with family and friends that took place at the beginning of January.

Things went badly for the politician when he landed in a pile-up of players. He required a few stitches and is well on his way to recovery, despite the fact that he still looks pretty rough around the edges.

Perhaps it is time for the 68-year-old politico to hang up the skates…
